You will visit the Orreaga/Roncesvalles monument complex, built in the late 12th and early 13th centuries. Outstanding in the architectural ensemble is the Collegiate Church of Saint Mary with its beautiful Gothic wood sculpture of Our Lady and its 17th century cloister, the 12th century Chapel of the Holy Spirit or Silo of Charlemagne, or Santiago Church.
After the visit, you’ll stop on the IBAÑETA HEIGHT (Valcarlos), a must at this point, not only for its historical references, but also for the splendid panoramic views it aords. At the top is the new San Salvador hermitage and the monument to Roldán, a monolith commemorating the Battle of Roncesvalles, when the troops of Charlemagne were beaten by the Vascones in the year 778.
After lunch at a traditional restaurant, you’ll take a look around Saint Jean de Pie de Port, the last French town on the Way of St. James before crossing into Spain. The town is the capital of Lower Navarre, a region which belonged to Navarre until 1527.
